TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Former Michigan Gov. William Milliken, a Republican, says he will vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton for president instead of Donald Trump.
Milliken issued a statement Monday saying he was "saddened and dismayed" that Republicans had nominated a candidate who does not embrace the country's ideals of "tolerance, civility, and equality."
He says the election "will define whether we maintain our commitment to those ideals or embark on a path that has doomed other governments and nations throughout history."
The 94-year-old Milliken served as governor from 1969 through 1982. The moderate Republican has endorsed several Democrats over the years, including 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry, then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2006 and Gary Peters for U.S. Senate in 2014.
