A Florida lawmaker plans to raise money by allowing corporate logo advertisements on the Sunshine state's license plates.

The Senate Transportation Economic Development Appropriations Committee is putting together legislation that would allow big corporations to pay a fee in exchange for placement of company logos on the plates.

Republican Sen. Mike Fasano, of New Port Richey, Fla., says the idea could generate money for the state. He plans to bring legislation to his colleagues during a hearing next week.

Florida already offers more than 100 specialty license plates and more options are proposed. Democratic Sen. Larcenia Bullard of Miami says to extend the offerings to include advertisements "is going to far."

Legislators in support of the bill suggest the move would allow drivers who chose the corporate plates to shave a dew dollars off annual registration costs. But public opinion is divided.

"I don’t think they need to be messing with the Department of Motor Vehicle," Jeff Luethge told MyFoxOrlando.com.

"I would definitely think about it anything that would help save money here or there is a great idea," said Annette Burkett.

Legislators have not yet released information on how much money they believe would be saved.
