FBI Director Comey: 'Very close personally' to Clinton email probe

FBI Director James Comey testified Tuesday that he is “very close personally” to the Hillary Clinton email investigation – while vowing it will be conducted “independently, competently, promptly.”

He spoke at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on encryption that focused heavily on the FBI’s clash with Apple over iPhone security.

But he was asked at the hearing about the Clinton email case and specifically White House comments suggesting the probe was not trending in the direction of an indictment.

Comey could not give an indication of when the probe would conclude and would not discuss the details, other than to say he’s closely involved to ensure it has the proper amount of resources.

In an interview a day earlier with Fox News, Attorney General Loretta Lynch also would give no deadline for concluding the case.

She said it’s being handled by “career independent lawyers” and they will “review the facts and the evidence and make a determination in due course.”
