Democrat-backing billionaire to raise bucks for Kasich

Republican candidate John Kasich locked in the support of a billionaire investor and philanthropist who has a history of supporting the Democratic Party.

Ron Burkle will hold a fundraiser in Los Angeles on Jan. 12 for the Ohio governor, according to a fundraising invitation received by Politico.

Burkle, the co-founder and managing partner of Yucaipa Companies, has held fundraisers mainly for Democrats in the past, and has even contributed to Hillary Clinton's past campaigns. According to the Federal Election Commission, Burkle contributed thousands of dollars to Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign and John Kerry's campaign in 2004.

Forbes lists Burkle's net worth at $1.58 billion, making him the 714th richest billionaire in the world.
