Congressional Calendar June 10, 2010

Oil spill hearings continue to dominate the agenda on Capitol Hill. Thursday’s committee action focuses on the immediate and long term impacts the disaster has on the Gulf Coast’s endangered ecosystem and economy. At 10:00 a.m. ET, a Senate Homeland Security subcommittee hears about the spill’s impact on communities from local mayors and parish presidents. At the same time on the House side, the House Natural Resources Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife Subcommittee listens to testimony from fish and wildlife experts, who will relay the possible long-term effects the spill could have on the environment.

The debate over energy and climate legislation continues to heat up. The Senate will consider a resolution from Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, to oppose the Environmental Protection Agency’s move to regulate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses under an “endangerment” finding. The measure, which has 40 co-sponsors, needs a simple majority of 51 votes to proceed.

Will the third time be the charm? President Obama’s latest choice to head the Transportation Security Administration, John Pistole, has his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. Obama’s two previous nominees withdrew from consideration after questions about their past threatened to derail the appointment process.
