Carson's Merry Christmas message helps him surpass Trump

After posting a Christmas photo on his social media page, Republican Party candidate Ben Carson surpassed GOP front-runner Donald Trump to become the most popular presidential candidate on Facebook.

"Not afraid to say Merry Christmas!" Carson writes in the caption next to a picture of the candidate standing besides a tree with an ornament reading "Christ is born" and holding a sign that reads "Merry Christmas" above a Jesus fish.

Over 600,000 fans have "liked" the photo since it was posted Friday evening, and Carson's page now has over 5 million "likes." Trump only has around 4,890,000 likes.

Things are less merry for Carson beyond Facebook. The neurosurgeon, who once competed closely with the business mogul, has fallen to 11 percent of the national vote. Trump has 34 percent in national polls.
