California: Senate and Gubernatorial GOP Primaries Grab Attention

Races to Watch:

Republican Senate Primary -- Tom Campbell vs. Carly Fiorina vs. Chuck DeVore

Republicans see a possible opening to knock off three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in a Democratic state that has experienced a fiscal crisis, a nasty political fight over the state budget and tax increases.

The three-way contest for the Republican nomination pits former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Carly Fiorina against former Rep. Tom Campbell and state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.

Campbell had been leading in the polls until May, when Fiorina began to surge. On the Democratic side, Boxer faces a long-shot challenge from blogger Mickey Kaus.

Republican Gubernatorial Primary -- Meg Whitman vs. Steve Poizner

In the Republican gubernatorial race, money has been the key for former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, who is vying against California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. Whitman has seen her lead fluctuate by as much as 40 points, but Poizner's $24 million spent on her campaign is no match for the $81 million Whitman has spent on the race. The heated battle has veered into debate over Arizona's tough immigration law, Whitman's ties to Wall Street investment giant Goldman Sachs and her inconsistent record of voting in elections have propelled headlines.

The victor will face Jerry Brown for the open seat being vacated by retiring Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
