Teddy Roosevelt said the presidency is a bully pulpit. George W. Bush frequently went out into the country to sell his programs and policies -- whether tax cuts or the Iraq War -- and often by inferring or stating that "Washington doesn't get it."

Anyone who suggests that what President Obama is doing now, visiting and holding town meetings in economically hard-hit communities to increase public pressure for passage of the stimulus package, is either unusual or wrong and is using a double standard -- or ignoring history--or both.
