Practical elegance has saturated the runways at New York Fashion Week for spring 2015.  Separates are emphasized for next season, which means women can get more wear out of individual pieces. Mix and match clothing you already own with a few new, trendy items to achieve a refreshing look for spring.

Ken Downing, fashion director and SVP of Neiman Marcus stores, gave us the scoop on next season’s shopping list. “It’s all about a 70s sensuality … I’m loving a longer tunic, I’m liking a long, fluid pant, a midi skirt, a maxi skirt … Anything that harkens to the 1970s and feels relevant and modern today is absolutely capturing my attention.” For Downing, the must-have item for spring is a long skirt with a slit upside the leg.

Key Trends:
The crop top is an essential item for spring, and you can nail the look by adding a high-waisted skirt, shown at DKNY and Milly. The midriff baring combination was even incorporated into evening looks at Monique Lhuillier and Christian Siriano. As an alternative to showing skin, try a boxy crop top that passes the top of your skirt or pant.

A variety of collars and necklines were shown on the runways. In addition to classic shirting, Peter Pan collars are still on trend and made a fun detail on dresses shown at Erin Fetherston. Plunging necklines were a hit at Reem Acra and Boss, showcasing femininity in fitted blouses and dresses.

Classic button-up shirts and shirtdresses were shown at Altuzarra, Marissa Webb and Creatures of Comfort. If you haven’t heard, the coolest way to style your button-up is to fasten each button all the way to your neck. This simple update can truly elevate your look.

More On This...

Maxi skirts are back, and the key for next season is a structured, ball gown silhouette for an elegant look. Kate Spade New York paired maxi skirts with both jewel neck crop tops and fitted button-ups. Pleated maxi skirts were another stylish twist used at Zimmerman. Mara Hoffman presented both maxi skirts and dresses in bold, bohemian prints with more of a casual feel. In addition to maxi skirts, midi length skirts are a great way to stay on trend but show some leg.

Bring your flared pants out from storage come springtime. Derek Lam and Rachel Zoe focused on flared pants that taper above the knee. A wider pant at Elizabeth and James emphasized the fluidity that Downing mentions. For something more trendy try culottes, a loose, wide-leg pant cropped above the ankle or mid-calf. Top off the look with a platform or heel to lengthen the leg.

Color & Prints:
Multidimensional florals had the strongest presence for spring. Clover Canyon had Asian inspired florals throughout the collection. Carolina Herrera showed breathtaking gowns with three-dimensional prints while sculptural and whimsical florals left a memorable impression at Delpozo.

Beautiful, bold shades of the sun tied in to many different runway shows.  The pops of color were commonly mixed into a collection with neutrals like navy, grey, and black. Bursts of red, orange and yellow in the palettes at Elie Tahari, Nanette Lepore and Erin Fetherston truly lead a bright future for spring.

Head to toe white continues to be a strong trend with stand-out looks at Marissa Webb, Badgley Mischka and Pamella Roland. Black and white also had a strong presence at Diane von Furstenberg with a focus on the classic gingham print, and Bibhu Mohapatra using windowpane print.
