Two years after his untimely death, the King of Pop’s legacy continues to inspire hundreds of tribute shows, concerts, events and memorabilia that keep fans connected to the spirit of Michael Jackson. While world renowned entities like Cirque du Soleil and tours like Michael Forever honor his life and music, a show unknown to most Americans is making news with a unique Latin salsa tribute to the legend: DELIRIO’s Nadie es Igual (None Like Him).
Surrounding the iconic Feria de Cali (The Cali Fair) events; which gathers approximately 1.5 million people and tourists from around the world, the salsa dance company, circus and musical show DELIRIO, brought a touch of cross-over flare with its unique blend of original music and choreographies that combined hot Latin salsa with Michael Jackson’s classics.
“Michael Jackson has influenced every dancer at some point in his or her life regardless of genre” said Arnold Taborda, lead choreographer for DELIRIO’s tribute show. “This is why I wanted to bring that influencer into what we do best, which is salsa”.
With a dance and production team of 300 people, iconic songs like Billie Jean, Black or White and Thriller are brought to life with an on-stage blend of original music videos combined with 150 salsa dancers seamlessly switching from a thriller walk to a salsa step and twist.
Andrés Tascón, the dancer who closes the tribute segment by flying above the crowd and landing to perform an exciting combination of salsa and moon-walking steps, said “Since a very young age I’ve been a fan of him [Michael Jackson]. In fact, I used to cry if I wasn’t able to follow his steps when I watched his videos. Today, I feel honored to carry this important role which has become a dream come true for me.”
However, beyond it being a great display of talent and dance genius, the performance is a testament to Michael Jackson’s vision for global unity. His legacy and impact transcends language, cultural barriers and geographical boundaries. Whether young or old, rich or poor, it is evident that the King of Pop is now the King of Salsa in DELIRIO, as his spirit continues to shine through in all corners of the world; including, Cali, Colombia.
