Three hospitals in Pennsylvania have reported thefts recently, and the items missing are not what you would think: scrap X-ray films, KYW Newsradio 1060 reported.

The thefts occurred in September, and police said the trend is nationwide.

The hospitals – Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Lankenau Hospital in Lower Merion and Grandview Hospital in upper Bucks County – said old patient films, blank films and defective films are missing. These films can be washed in chemicals to recover the silver, which is cash-worthy.

Hospital officials said the films do not include patient information.
