Oregon State announced that freshman defensive tackle Fred Thompson died Wednesday night after collapsing while playing basketball on campus.

According to a report from The Oregonian, Thompson, who would have turned 20 on Sunday, suffered an apparent heart attack.

"Oregon State University student-athlete Fred Thompson, a freshman on the OSU football team, died early Wednesday evening in Corvallis," the school said in a statement.

"According to OSU officials, Thompson was playing basketball at Dixon Recreation Center on the OSU campus when he collapsed. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where he was pronounced dead."

The school said coach Mike Riley was off-campus recruiting and was on his way back to Corvallis.

Oregon State will hold a press conference Thursday to address the incident.

The 6ft 4in, 317-pound Thompson hailed from Richmond, Calif., and played at Oakland Tech High School.

Thompson was considered a grayshirt at OSU. A shoulder injury set him back last season.
