A 10-year-old girl in Mexico has given birth, the Daily Mail reported.

The girl, who was just 31 weeks pregnant, was checked into a hospital in Puebla on October 22 because she was suffering from seizures and other potentially fatal complications.

She had a baby boy by Caesarean section weighing 3 pounds, 5 ounces at the Women's Hospital, 60 miles outside of Mexico City.

Reports say the premature baby is currently in intensive care but in good condition, considering his weight. The young mother, who is recovering well, is allowed visits every day to breastfeed.
The birth has been reported to the state’s Attorney General’s Office and is under investigation as to whether the girl was raped, and if so, by whom.

State laws in Mexico prohibit abortions for young mothers unless there is proof that they were a victim of sexual assault. The legal age of consent in Mexico is 12 years old. Those younger than 12 who have abortions can face a fine or prison if they cannot prove the pregnancy was a result of sexual abuse.

These laws are currently under review.
