An Indian woman is recovering after doctors removed a tumor larger than a football, the AFP reported.

Doctors said 45 year-old Suresha Singh is in stable condition after a three-hour operation to remove a tumor weighing more than 48 pounds from her ovary.  Singh had been living with the non-cancerous tumor for six years because her husband told her she would die if she underwent an operation.

"It was made of solid tissue and was the largest I have come across in all the medical books or journals," lead surgeon Savita Rani Singhal told the AFP.  Singh could not breathe or walk properly due to the tumor, he added.

The operation was conducted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, India.
