Most couples enjoy looking at old photos and reliving fond memories – but for Neil and Jennie Bakewell from the U.K., flipping through family snapshots prompts shock and disbelief.
At their peak, the couple had a colossal combined weight of 924 pounds. Their excess weight meant that, for five years, sex was physically impossible.
It also left them unable to enjoy a romantic evening at a cinema or restaurant for fear of getting stuck in the seats. And through 10 years together six beds had collapsed under their weight.
Seeing their relationship crumbling before them, the pair took drastic action. Both of them underwent gastric bypass surgeries and have now shed more than 400 pounds between the both of them.
Neil, 34, said he believes he wouldn't be alive without this operation.
"Before the surgery I was told I wouldn't reach 40,” he said. “I didn't like to go out as people would shout and stare at us. But since losing the weight we're different people – it's given us our life back."
Neil is now 322 pounds and hopes to lose even more weight. Jennie, who used to tip the scales at more than 320 pounds, now weighs 196 pounds and has gone from size 30 to 16. She said she would like to reach a size 14.
The sexual side of their relationship has also been resurrected.
"This surgery has given me back my husband,” Jennie said. “As a couple and a family, we're closer than ever."
