The Colorado Medical Board hopes to know in May when a judge will hear its complaint against a Denver surgeon, FOX 31 reported.
Dr. Warren Kortz faces 14 counts of unprofessional conduct in connection with a series of failed surgeries from 2008 to 2010.
According to the complaint, the operations at Porter Adventist Hospital, using a device called the DaVinci robot, utilized improper procedures and resulted in torn aortas, a sponge left inside one patient and assorted other problems. The complaint cites the cases of 11 separate patients.
“The Board generally will file between 10 and 15 notices of charges in a particular calendar year,” said Marshall Smith, Colorado Medical Board Program Director. “So it is a very serious matter.”
One man who was not a patient of Kortz’ said he was treated poorly by the doctor last year. He said he didn’t like the way Kortz tore off his bandage after hernia surgery performed by one of Kortz’ colleagues.
“He just grabbed it with his whole open hand and just ripped it off my chest,” he said in a phone interview Thursday. “Just very unprofessional.”
In a statement, Lisanne Leasure, Kortz’ attorney, called her client “a very experienced and excellent surgeon who has helped many Coloradans over his lengthy career.” Porter Hospital said it investigates all allegations thoroughly.
