A minor league contract is an unwelcome status symbol for your average baseball player. It means you’re guaranteed of nothing. It means you should lay low.

On Monday, however, the Yankees treated their latest minor league contract recipient like royalty. No one objected.

Landis Sims, 10 years old and born without hands or lower legs, became a Yankee for a day, getting his own locker at George M. Steinbrenner Field — between pitchers CC Sabathia and Dellin Betances — and participating in most of the team’s pre-game activities as he sported a Masahiro Tanaka jersey. Sabathia helped him “negotiate” his one-day, minor-league deal with Yankees senior vice president and assistant general manager Jean Afterman, and Alex Rodriguez sat with Sims and his family in the clubhouse and then stretched next to him.
