The only thing better than an ice cream cone on a warm spring afternoon is a free ice cream cone on a warm spring afternoon.

Today, Carvel locations across the country are giving customers just that — a complimentary junior soft-serve cone — to mark “the official start of ice cream season,” Carvel president Scott Colwell stated.

The free cones will only be available between 3–8 p.m. at participating shops on April 27. Customers will also be able to choose from three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, or Carvel’s new limited-time-only Cookie Butter, a flavor inspired by the spiced, crunchy speculoos cookies (think Lotus Biscoff cookies) eaten around the holidays in some European countries.

In addition to providing ice cream lovers with a free frozen treat, Carvel’s Free Cone Day will be donating funds to aid in disaster relief efforts.

For the sixth straight year, the company has partnered with the Red Cross to support the charitable organization’s annual Giving Day. So, while supplies last, Carvel will be offering customers special coupon books — with a total value of over $20 — for just $1 apiece, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.

“Free Cone Day is much more than just a ‘freebie’ day,” said Colwell. “It’s a special day for us to show genuine gratitude to our loyal guests while coming together to raise funds for a very worthy cause.”

One of Carvel’s biggest competitors, Ben & Jerry’s, offered a similar deal earlier this month on April 4, although they didn’t directly partner with any charities to raise funds. Instead, the company took the opportunity to tout its equal rights and climate justice initiatives.
