A section of a rum distillery caught fire in Jamaica Monday, burning more than 17,000 gallons of rum before it was contained.

A large reserve of rum in Long Pond Sugar Factory’s distillery storage in Trelawny Parish was destroyed after a pile of bagasse from the sugar cane field caught fire and quickly spread to the distillery area, the Jamaica Observer reported.

“Basically, what is happening here is that the fire is confined to the main store area. One area stores alcohol and the other section stores mainly raw material to make rum,” Deputy Superintendent Roland Walters, divisional commander for the Trelawny Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, told the Jamaica Observer.

The distillery itself was not affected by the fire, according to the report. No injuries were reported.
News of the fire comes less than one month after a bourbon storage facility in Bardstown, Ky., came crashing to the ground, destroying an estimated 9,000 barrels of whiskey.
The owner of the bourbon distillery later faced possible fines for failing to notify environmental officials of the alcohol leaking into a nearby creek and harming fish.
