A battle is brewing between a craft beermaker and a New York City business over the name “Dogfish.”
Delaware-based Dogfish Head Brewery, which has been around since 1995, said Dogfish Accelerator, which finances films and “media rockstars,” came to the brewer in 2013 asking for sponsorship, a Brooklyn federal court lawsuit states.
The brewer not only declined, but asked Dogfish Accelerator to stop using the Dogfish name, and later successfully challenged the company’s attempts to register it at the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Dogfish Head Brewery is “among the most revered brewers of craft beer in the United States” but could face consumer confusion, it claims in its suit filed against Dogfish Accelerator last week.
Dogfish Accelerator founder James Belfer denied seeking sponsorship and declined to comment.
