Taxation without representation – it’s a complaint that triggered the American Revolution. And now a Washington DC Council member is looking to make the district the 51st state for the very same reason!

The Washington Post reports D.C. Council Member Charles Allen is looking to change the DC license plate slogan from “Taxation Without Representation” to “End Taxation Without Representation” in the hopes that it will spark a “rallying cry for equality” among district residents.

Allen told the Post, “Congress denies our tax-paying citizens one of the most fundamental rights of an American, the right to congressional representation. It’s past time to end that.”

Washington Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has pushed to make the city the 51st state during her time in office. Unlike states, DC must get their annual budget approved by Congress. Federal legislators have a say in the city’s spending, yet there are no Senators that represent our nation’s capital and the one House representative is a delegate who is not permitted to vote on the House floor.
