Mario Lopez is one step closer in bringing his winning smile and charm to “The X Factor.”

The “Extra” TV host is in the running to become the next host on the singing competition, along with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian and actor Corbin Bleu, entertainment gossip site TMZ is reporting.

TMZ says that only two of the contenders will end up getting the gig. According to insiders Lopez and Kardashian are the top picks of “The X Factor” creator Simon Cowell.

“The X Factor” debuted its second season on Sept.12 with singers Demi Lovato and Britney Spears being the talk of the show.

Live episodes start airing in November.

There are more changes to "X Factor" than the addition of Spears and Lovato, who replaced season one Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger after the show fell short of Cowell's high-flying ratings predictions.

The revamped "X Factor" retains the pro forma mix of oddballs and genuinely talented singers, but it's less grandiose. One example: The addition of a reality TV-style backstage glance at contestant rivalries, but with a light touch.

Fox's show isn't the only game in town. NBC expanded this week's return of "The Voice" to three days and in January “American Idol” will also be on air.

Based on reporting by the Associated Press.
