The moment MTV axed “The Hills” after six seasons,Spencer Pratt felt that Sept. 11, 2001 hit all over again.

“[The Hills getting cancelled] was our 9/11,” Pratt told Vice magazine.

The small screen villain, along with wife Heidi Montag, escaped from LA to Costa Rica once the show wrapped, expecting to purchase a Caribbean abode of their own. After realizing they couldn’t afford a tropical paradise, the pair shacked up at the Ritz-Carlton for six months before heading home broke to California.

“Nobody wants to break into our home anymore,” Pratt, 32, explained. “They Google our new worth and see we are worth $10.”

At the height of “The Hills” popularity, Pratt and Montag, 29, made their fortune by selling photos of themselves in the UK.

“We were fame whores, getting literally a million plus a year in photos and being hated for it,” Pratt continued. “It’s so frustrating that people don’t recognize that this was genius. This was innovating!”

Despite the stigma of reality TV’s most notorious twosome, the couple stepped away from the spotlight and currently reside at the vacation home of Pratt’s father outside Santa Barbara. Given the chance to re-write their history, Montag wouldn’t give it a second thought.

“The biggest misconception about us is that we wouldn’t do it all over again,” she shared.
