Two of Latin music’s most iconic singers, Conga master Poncho Sánchez and singer/actress Rita Moreno, will be honored in the week leading up to the upcoming Latin Grammy Awards, The Los Angeles Times is reporting.
The 2012 Latin Grammy Awards will be taking place Nov.15 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Univision, the cable network who has been broadcasting the ceremony live for the past several years, will be transmitting the ceremony again in the fall.
Other Latin artists who will be honored include by Spanish singer and composer Luz Casal, Brazilian musician Milton Nascimiento, Mexican singer and actress Daniela Romo and Brazilian guitarist Toquinho.
The ceremony for the Lifetime Achievement recipients will take place the night before the Latin Grammys.
Spanish flamenco guitarist Juan Carmona “Habichuela” will also be acknowledged with the Latin Academy Trustees Award along with Yomo Toro known as the Puerto Rican “King of Cuatro.”
The Latin Recording Academy also crowned Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso as this year’s person of the year.
Veloso, a singer, guitarist and writer, has won eight Latin Grammys and two Grammys over the span of his 40-year career. A plethora of artists and close friends will be performing several of his songs at the ceremony in his name.
The Latin Recording Academy’s president/CEO Gabriel Abaroa Jr., said that all proceeds of the event will be donated to Veloso’s charity, Fundación Viva Cazuza in Brazil—an organization which strives to educate, prevent and treat individuals with HIV/AIDS and other about the repercussions of the disease.
"Caetano Veloso has become the preeminent ambassador of Brazilian music and culture," Abaroa said in a statement.
