Park City, Utah – David Ortiz said he wants to take his “sabor latino” to the as yet untitled MTV2 series in which he is co-starring in this spring.
“That would be my dream,” the Boston Red Sox slugger told Fox News Latino.
Ortiz was at the the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, helping to launch a Pedigree dog food that includes a screening of a short, documentary-style ad that has the self-proclaimed dog lover asking people to visit their local animal shelter.
“I come from the Dominican Republic, but when it comes to representing Latinos in general, I’m from every country.”
The baseball star better known as "Big Papi" is also producing and hosting the MTV2 show alongside the 2013 National League MVP, Andrew McCutchen.
“What we’re trying to do is bring sports and music even closer together,” Ortiz said. “We athletes live through music and we know that musicians live through sports. So it’s what you could call the perfect combination that we are going to create starting in April.”
Ortiz said music is a huge part of his baseball career. He’s always putting on music for his fellow teammates in the Red Sox clubhouse.
“You have to make work fun, so I always try to do that [with music],” said Ortiz.
The 30-episode series will be taped at the MLB Fan Cave in lower Manhattan, but other details of the show have not been announced yet. However, Ortiz hints that there are some exciting plans in the pipeline.
“We will be inviting different players and when we can, we will also be inviting musicians,” he said. "We’ll just be having a good time.”
It's unclear what if any Latino elements will be incorporated into the show, but Ortiz told Fox News Latino that regardless of whether the producers choose to focus on his Dominican background, he hopes to be a good representative for all Hispanics.
“You know that as Latinos, we come from different countries to find a better life here in the United States,” he said. “And for me, representing the Latino community is an honor. It’s something I carry in my heart.”
Whether he’s in the ballpark or on TV, Ortiz hopes to show the world how much of an impact Latinos have in the United States.
“A lot of us Latinos are immigrants here in the United States, and we have to show everyone that we do great things in a good way to send a positive message,” he said. “So your dreams can come true as long as you follow through.”
Being in the world of sports and television, Ortiz says, puts him in a special position.
“I come from the Dominican Republic, but when it comes to representing Latinos in general, I’m from every country,” he said. “I have friends in every Latin American country. I get along with people from every country. Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Panama, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras.”
According to MTV.com, Ortiz’s series will also include on-air and online events which will be broadcast on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, and MTV Jams.
