Meet Pope Francis, First South American Pontiff
Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, is the new pope and leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. He took the name of Francis, for the saint devoted to the poor. At 76, he has become the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope.
Celebrities went wild on Twitter Wednesday after the selection of the new Pope -- former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio -- was announced in Italy on Wednesday.
Bergoglio, 76, became the first pope chosen from Latin America. The announcement came minutes after white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
“Please call me Pope JORGE!” wrote an excited George Lopez. Minutes later, Craig Ferguson joked that the new Pope would “replace Leno on NBC at 11:30[pm.]”
The church overcame deep divisions to select the 266th pope in a remarkably fast conclave. Elected on the fifth ballot, he was chosen in one of the fastest conclaves in years, remarkable given there was no clear front-runner going into the vote.
Actor Aziz Ansari lightheartedly said he thinks his chances are good to become the next Pope.
“Feeling good about my chances to be new Pope. My agents said I should hear something today…,” he wrote, while the “How I Met Your Mother” actor Neil Patrick Harris told his followers to watch out for ordained tweets.
