New York – Lin-Manuel Miranda’s time in the title role of his Tony-winning smash, “Hamilton,” will be coming to an end this summer.
It has been speculated that the playwright would be departing the show on July 9. While he didn’t specify the date, Miranda did confirm that he would give his final bow this summer.
At the Tony Awards press room on Sunday night, Miranda joked that audiences will actually get sick of him being the show’s star because the role of Alexander Hamilton is one that he will not quickly age out of.
“I intend to drop in on this thing … over and over again,” Miranda said.
According to Playbill.com, it is anticipated that Miranda will be in the cast when "Hamilton" opens London’s West End.
Fresh off their 11-Tony winning night, the show’s producers confirmed on Monday that the show will head to the West End’s Victoria Palace Theatre in October 2017 after an extensive refurbishment of the theater.
“The support 'Hamilton' has received from our British fans has been incredible — I have been reminded of their love, which is just as our King George would want it to be!” Miranda said in a statement according to Playbill.com.
Casting and full dates for the London show have not been confirmed.
After the Tonys, show producers declined to talk about when actors would depart the original New York City production but said announcements would be made in the near future.
The Hollywood Reporter said Miranda’s co-star Phillipa Soo, who was nominated for a Tony but lost out to Cynthia Erivo, is expected to depart the musical in early July.
“Hamilton” – which was nominated for a record 16 categories – took home 11 statuettes including best musical, best score, choreography and trophies for stars Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
“Alexander Hamilton was a dreamer … I stand on this stage tonight, surrounded by dreamers,” show producer Jeffrey Seller said during his acceptance speech for best musical. “Look around. Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.”
“Hamilton” was not able to break the 12-award record haul by “The Producers.”
