Train hero enrolled in Umpqua, heartbroken over tragedy
Paris train hero Alek Skarlatos, currently enrolled as a student at Umpqua Community College, tells 'On the Record' he likely would have been on campus at the time of the shooting if he hadn't had other obligations
“Dancing With the Stars” contestant Alek Skarlatos, the Oregon National Guardsman who gained international recognition for helping to stop an armed terrorist aboard a French train in August, was a former student at Umpqua Community College, where a gunman killed at least ten people Thursday.
Skarlatos said he wished he could have been on campus to help in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“While I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time in August aboard a train bound for Paris, I only wish that the same could be said for today,” Skarlatos told FOX411 in a statement.
“I praise the first responders who were on the ground today in Roseburg as they undoubtedly were integral in saving numerous lives and putting a stop to what could have been more tragic than it is.”
"My heart and prayers go out to this community, my community, right now," he said.
Skarlatos left 'Dancing With the Stars' rehearsals Thursday to be with friends and family in his hometown of Roseburg.
He received the Legion of Honour award after his heroism in France.
