"Flip or Flop" stars Tarek and Christina El Moussa announced their separation on Monday but the reality stars said they have been living separate lives since May.

"We have both dated other people following the separation, but neither of us is ready to announce anything in terms of another relationship," the pair told People.

Things fell apart following an incident six months ago where police were called to their home over what the couple called an "unfortunate misunderstanding."

They described the incident to People saying, "Tarek was going on a hike and took a gun for protection from mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and rattlesnakes."

They said in their statement Monday that police were called out of "an abundance of caution" and that there was no violence and no charges were filed.

They added that their decision to separate is in the "best interests of the children and the best way to determine a path forward."

The El Moussas confirmed to FOX411 "Flip or Flop" will continue despite their split.

"We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together."

"Flip or Flop" is HGTV's second-highest rated show after "Fixer Upper." The premiere episode of a five-episode spin-off that aired in August titled "Flip or Flip: Selling Summer" helped the network land the lead position among cable networks and the fourth spot among all TV networks the night it aired.
