ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst appeared to fall asleep while doing a live TV interview, but he insists he was glancing down at his phone during the live broadcast.

Anchor Cari Champion was chatting with Windhorst on “Sports Center,” and she asked him to weigh in on a comparison between Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook. When she paused for Windhorst’s answer, he appeared to have his eyes closed and was quiet.

As Champion began to tell viewers the network was experiencing a technical issue, Windhorst chimed in with his reply to her question.

The writer for ESPN.com insists he wasn’t sleeping on the air.

He tweeted on Tuesday that he was focused on his phone instead.

Champion also defended Windhorst, insisting he was awake.
