Two armed men storm a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a suburb of Rouen in northern France. The attackers slit the throat of elderly priest Father Jacques Hamel and take four other people hostage. Police shoot the attackers dead. ISIS has claimed that the men were "soldiers."

A 19-year-old Norwegian-Somali man knifes an American woman to death and injures several other people, before being subdued and arrested by the police. No link has been found to radicalization but terror has not been completely ruled out. A "mental health" excuse has been panned by some.

Charleroi, Belgium
Two female police officers are wounded, one of them seriously, in a machete attack in front of the police headquarters in the Belgian city of Charleroi. The assailant is killed by police. A Twitter message on the Charleroi police department's official account said the officers were attacked by a person shouting "Allahu akbar," which is Arabic for "God is Great."

Quetta, Pakistan
Pakistani militants strike at the heart of the country's legal profession, killing a prominent attorney and then bombing the hospital where dozens of other lawyers had gathered to mourn. The bomb, packed with ball bearings, tears through a crowded state-run hospital. The twin attacks kill at least 70 people, most of them lawyers, authorities said. Another 100 are injured.
