'Dexter' star Julie Benz on getting mistaken for Christina Applegate, her admiration for Angelina Jolie

Actress Julie Benz was on-hand last week to present actress Christina Applegate with the coveted Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award at the 2012 Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards, and apparently the share more in common than a friendship and a profession.  

“My very first job in Los Angeles was on ‘Married With Children. We have known each other through the years,” Benz told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column at the star-studded event that sought to show support for women in the entertainment industry. “People actually think I am her a lot, and I take that as a great compliment. She has had such a long and great career.”

But truth be told, if the “Dexter” star could play any living actress in a biopic today, she didn’t hesitate over who she would choose.

“I would portray Angelina Jolie for lots of reasons,” Benz continued with a cheeky laugh. “She is amazing, her humanitarian work is amazing and she is just gorgeous.”

The actress also stressed how important it is for females amid the film world to support organizations like Women in Film, and to have each other’s back at all times.

“Business is tough and it's especially tough as a woman in Hollywood and it’s such as important thing for us to stand together as one and support and honor each other,” she continued. “I think more and more we have women being portrayed better in the media, but in certain types of areas we still have a lot of pressure on women and their bodies, especially in the fashion industry. And that's something they are working to correct and change, but it all comes with time.”

On the other hand, “Dynasty” star and stage/screen veteran Diahann Carroll wasn’t so optimistic about direction and reputation of women in Hollywood.

“It was very important for us to support each other and fight for each other if necessary... But it has grown into something I never thought I would be a part of,” she added. “We've gone astray, this was supposed to be an informative venue for us but we have ladies walking around with their rear ends hanging out. And the attitudes of young people toward sex are frightening. I don't know where we are going with this.”
