Renowned Mexican actress Lorena Rojas, star of telenovelas like “Azul tequila” and “Alcanzar una Estrella,” passed away after a battle with cancer. She was 44.
Rojas passed away Monday at her home in Miami, surrounded by her boyfriend, family and friends, her talent agency Latin WE said in a statement.
The actress, born in Mexico City in 1971, had been fighting the disease since 2008 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2013, the tumor metastasized to other parts of her body. She told Mexican state news Agency Notimex that “(she) was aware that this disease… is a chronic disease.”
News broke this past fall that Rojas’ cancer had returned and taken her liver.
The actress, who earned her first acting credits in the early 1990s, appeared in many telenovelas over the years including most recently in an October 2014 episode of the Venezuelan show “Demente Criminal.”
In addition to soap operas, she appeared in five films and, last year, worked as a musical composer for the children’s album “Hijos del Sol.”
On Feb. 10, just days before she died, Rojas celebrated her 44th birthday. She took to Twitter to thank her fans and supports for all their birthday wishes. She called it a “beautiful day.”
Rojas is survived by her daughter Luciana.
