It is no longer a matter of if, but when Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) will rekindle their romance on “The Big Bang Theory.”

In the December 17 episode — filmed earlier this week in Los Angeles — TV’s favorite nerd couple will finally slide between the sheets together, CBS announced today.

So was this the week they officially reconciled?

At the top of the episode “Platonic Permutation,” Sheldon has an extra ticket to the annual Thanksgiving lunch buffet at the nearby aquarium cafeteria.

When no one wants to go, he invites Amy, who agrees to attend “as friends.”

“You don’t think that would be awkward?” he asks.

“It is Thanksgiving in an aquarium cafeteria, so I am going to go out on a limb and say ‘yes,’” she responds.  “But if you mean between us, I think it will be fine.”

When she arrives to pick him up, Sheldon is armed with a list of safe topic for polite conversation among friends.

But he quickly goes off script and asks, “I know you have been seeing other men.  Have you had coitus with any of them?”

Amy explains that she has been on six dates with three different men, mostly just for coffee or dinner.

She has only one question for Sheldon:  “Are you doing okay?”

He seems to be — at least on the surface — and when the couple arrives at the aquarium, it appears Amy is the one who is missing their more intimate connection.

Meanwhile, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) are at home preparing their first Thanksgiving dinner as a married couple.

Things get awkward quick when Penny forgets when Leonard’s birthday is.

He rattles off a laundry list of personal facts about his wife, which makes him look like the husband of the year — until Penny figures out that he has been reading her diary.

To make it up to her, Leonard offers to let her read his private diary, but it is mostly about “Star Wars.”

He then dresses up in Penny’s bright orange lingerie and invites her to take a photo and husband-shame him on the Internet.  She declines, but predictably, Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Howard (Simon Helberg), Emily (Laura Spencer) and Bernadette (Melissa Rouch) bust in and catch him in the embarrassing moment.

They were all returning from an afternoon of volunteering at the local rescue mission, where Howard has a chance encounter washing dishes with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla.

“I really want you to adopt me,” he gushes before they exchange email addresses and share a piece of discarded pumpkin pie.

The episode’s final scene circles back to Sheldon who is at Leonard and Penny’s house smiling about how glad he is to finally be able to interact with Amy as “just friends.”

Suddenly, the phone rings.  It is Amy, who is driving home from having dinner with her mom.

“I was thinking that maybe I am ready to be your girlfriend again,” she tells him.

“I thought we were ‘just friends,’” Sheldon replies.

“We are, but…”

Then, the moment or truth.

“I excel at many things but getting over you wasn’t one of them,” Sheldon explains.

“I think I need to just be your friend.”

Amy is visibly disappointed as continues on her way home alone.

Perhaps things will start to turn around next week.

“The Big Bang Theory” airs Thursday nights at 8:00 PM on CBS.
