Andy Garcia on his Newest Film 'For Greater Glory,' and More

Academy Award Winner Andy García starred in Godfather  3 and the Oceans 11 series, but now he's embarking on a new project that tells the story of Mexico's fight for religious freedom.

The film, "For Greater Glory," is a true story of the Cristero War, also known as the Cristiada, when the Mexican government stripped religious freedom from its people, which resulted in a bloody war that led to the deaths of more than 90,000 in three years.

"The Mexican government...basically kicked out the Vatican and curtailed religious freedom in the 1920s and there was this rebellion, civil war, and the people rose up," García explained.

The war has been a taboo subject for many Mexicans and Mexican Americans for many years, García explained.

"You ask an average Mexican if they know about the Cristiado war and they go 'what?'" García said on Fox & Friends.

García is the star in the film. He plays an ex-general named Enrique Gorostieta Velarde, a man who gets recruited by the Cristero Army, the people fighting for freedom, to lead the rebellion.

The film is set to be released in U.S. box offices on June 1.
