An 83-year-old Korean War veteran from New Hampshire who dropped out of high school nearly 70 years ago can now call himself a graduate.

The Portsmouth Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1eID981) Robert Pecunies was awarded an honorary degree Wednesday afternoon from Portsmouth High School — the same school he was supposed to graduate from in 1949.

Pecunies grew up in Portsmouth. He dropped out in the ninth grade and joined the U.S. Navy when he turned 18. He had several stints on a ship in the Mediterranean.

Pecunies reflected on his life as part of his graduation requirements. He wrote an autobiography detailing his childhood, school years and adulthood.

He also graduated this month from Adult Education in Kittery, Maine.
