Persistent rain at Richmond International Raceway resulted in the cancellation of Friday's scheduled qualifying for the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race (FOX, Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET).

As a result, the field for Sunday's race will be set by times from Friday morning's practice session.

That means Kevin Harvick's No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet will start on the pole, flanked by the No. 22 Team Penske Ford of Joey Logano.

Row 2 will be six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson on the inside, with the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Bristol winner Carl Edwards on the outside.

Denny Hamlin will start fifth in a second JGR entry, with Brad Keselowski's Penske Ford next to him.

Both of the front-row starters relied on strategy by going out early in practice in qualifying trim to set their respective fast laps.

"We decided to go and try to take advantage of being the first car on the race track, which is usually a pretty big advantage here when the track is green and doesn't have a lot of rubber on it," said Harvick. "And so, it worked out today; and Rodney (Childers, crew chief) and everybody had a good plan."

"It is a good start for us for sure," said Logano. "I feel like my team did a great job understanding the weather today before we hit the race track. We went out there and made our qualifying run off the truck and then focused in on race trim thinking that we weren't going to get to qualifying anyway."

In his first race this season, Tony Stewart was 18th in practice, which is where he'll start the race. Stewart was just one position behind Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was 17th.

Harvick, the 2014 series champion, comes into the ninth race of the season with a lead of 1 point over Edwards and 16 points over Johnson. Kyle Busch leads active drivers with four victories at Richmond.
