SANAA, Yemen – Yemen has convicted nine men for arms smuggling after their ship was intercepted in the country's territorial waters in January, sentencing them with up to 10 years in prison for smuggling Iranian-made weapons.
The Defense Ministry says the weapons included material for bombs and suicide belts, surface-to-air missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition.
The official SABA news agency says Tuesday's ruling was handed down by a court in the city of Aden. Yemen's coast guard had intercepted the ship, Jihan 1, in an operation coordinated with the U.S. Navy.
The court also ordered authorities to confiscate the weapons, the ship and $30,000 found on board.
One of the nine suspects — the alleged smugglers' ringleader — was tried in absentia. He was identified as Hameed Dahash and sentenced to 10 years.
