The Yemeni government has ended a mutiny by officers suspected to be loyalists of the country's ousted leader against the top commander of an elite paramilitary unit.

Yemen's official SABA news agency reported on Friday that Interior Minister Galal al-Rowaishan has appointed Abdel-Razak al-Marouni as a new commander of the Special Forces. The SABA report made no mention of Mohammed Mansour al-Ghadraa, the commander who led the unit until Thursday's apparent rebellion against his authority.

The appointment came a day after gunfire rang out from inside the unit headquarters prompting the deployment of Presidential Guards to seal off the surrounding are in the heart of the capital. The mutineers are believed to be officers loyal to ousted Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
