Woman Discovers 'Undead' Man In Cemetery When Hand Emerges From Grave

During a visit to a family tomb in São Paulo, a Brazilian woman must have thought it was the dawn of the dead when a ghastly hand shot out of a nearby grave and an "undead" man struggled to emerge from the ground.

The woman, who has not been identified, was in a cemetery in the São Paulo suburb of Ferraz de Vasconcelos when she began to hear faint noises emanating from a grave close to her family’s tomb. Upon closer inspection, she saw the earth around the grave begin to move and a man’s body begin to emerge from the soil.

“I was terrified to see a man, who I thought was dead, trying to get out of the grave,” the woman said, according to The Daily Mail.

While the terrified woman initially fled in terror that the zombie apocalypse was upon us, she decided not to let sleeping corpses lie and notified emergency services about the rising.

Local authorities didn’t at first believe the woman’s claim of the walking dead and only responded to her call after she brought the issue to the staff at the cemetery’s office.

“They kept questioning me asking: ‘Are you serious? This is a joke, isn’t it?’” she said.

A YouTube video of the shocking rescue effort shows the seemingly lifeless body of a man in a gray sweatshirt half-buried in the grave. But, after an emergency worker examined the man closely, he noticed the man was breathing.

With his dirty, bruised face, the man actually looked like a zombie. But police say that he is a former city worker who was involved in an altercation on the other side of town. His assailants apparently beat him senseless before dumping his body in the empty grave.

The man is now at a local hospital where doctors say he is "coming back to life."

Police called the attack a “despicable vendetta” and believe it was carried by more than one person.

This is the second such attack in the last three months to occur in Brazil.

In September, three teenagers in Rio de Janeiro beat a homeless man over the head with a shovel before burying his unconscious body in a sandy beach. The teenagers suffocated the man with a plastic bag and stripped him naked before dumping him in a sandy grave.

The man was found, but eventually died in the hospital. The three teenagers were arrested on the scene after a witness to the attack sent an anonymous tip to police.
