Opposition activists in Bangladesh have clashed with police and ruling party members on the first day of a four-day general strike.

At least one man has died and scores have been injured across the country Sunday.

The strike is meant to force Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and form a caretaker government made up of people from outside of mainstream political parties to oversee an election next year.

Television stations say a passenger died after pickets attacked an auto-rickshaw he was travelling in in southeastern district of Chittagong.

Over the last two weeks at least 18 people have died during similar protests.
