CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan election officials have rejected a high-profile opposition leader's attempt to register as a candidate for upcoming congressional elections.

Maria Corina Machado announced Monday that the National Elections Council had rejected her attempt to register to run in the Dec. 6 elections.

Machado is calling the rejection of her candidacy a grotesque violation of her rights.

She previously served in the oil country's National Assembly, but was stripped of her congressional seat in the midst of violent anti-government protests last year.

In July, elections officials barred her and a handful of other high-profile critics of the country's socialist administration from holding office. Officials say Machado failed to make required financial disclosures.
