PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – The U.N. cultural agency has determined that a shipwreck off northern Haiti is not the Santa Maria, the lost flagship of Christopher Columbus.
UNESCO says artefacts found at the wreck site near Cap-Haitien are from a more recent vessel. The agency sent experts to the site after U.S. explorer Barry Clifford announced earlier this year that he believed the ship might be the Santa Maria, in what would be a major archaeological find.
The UNESCO report was released Monday.
Last month, Clifford told The Associated Press that UNESCO did not consult with him before publishing the report and he expected it to raise doubts. But he said he still believes the wreckage could be the ship that struck a reef and was abandoned in December 1492.
