UN expresses 'outrage' at attacks against civilians in Syria including the use of barrel bombs

The U.N. Security Council is expressing "outrage" at all attacks against civilians in Syria including those involving shelling and barrel bombs.

The bombings have reportedly been used extensively in Aleppo and other areas in recent days leaving many civilians dead.

A press statement issued by the council on Friday also condemned increased terrorist attacks resulting in numerous casualties and destruction carried out by the Islamic State group, Al-Nusra Front and other individuals and groups associated with al-Qaida.

The council issued the statement after a closed-door briefing Thursday by John Ging, the director of U.N. humanitarian operations, on the upsurge of violence in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Council members reiterated that the Syrian crisis can only be solved by implementing the 2012 Geneva communique calling for a transitional governing body.
