UK pledges to cut carbon emissions in half by 2025

LONDON – The British government says it plans to cut the country's carbon emissions in half by 2025.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne told Parliament on Tuesday that Britain will adopt plans to cut emissions by about 50 percent by that year. The goal will be based on emissions levels in the 1990s.

The goal is part of longer-term legal commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050.

Industry representatives have argued against the targets, saying they could limit economic competitiveness.
