LONDON – British lawmakers say the former boss of failed retailer BHS should be stripped of his knighthood after the chain of stores collapsed with the loss of 11,000 jobs.
The vote is nonbinding, but it is rare for Parliament to intervene on the issue of honors.
BHS, whose stores had stood on British streets since the 1920s, went into administration in April, leaving behind a 571 million pound ($698 million) pension black hole.
On Thursday furious lawmakers criticized Sir Philip Green, who sold BHS for 1 pound shortly before it collapsed.
Labour legislator David Winnick said Green had "shamed British capitalism," and others accused him of asset-stripping BHS before discarding it.
Prime Minister Theresa May's office said a decision on the knighthood was a matter for the independent Honors Forfeiture Committee.
