LONDON – Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn faces a showdown with some of his party's parliamentary members over his opposition to launching airstrikes against militants in Syria.
Corbyn plans to meet with senior advisers Monday before announcing whether he will demand that the party's lawmakers join him in voting against the airstrikes proposed last week by Prime Minister David Cameron.
He is under pressure to permit a "free vote" that would allow Labour legislators to vote their conscience rather than adhere to Corbyn's position.
The recently elected leader has rejected Cameron's assertion that using Royal Air Force bombers against the Islamic State group in Syria is in Britain's national interest.
Cameron has said he will seek a vote when he is confident the measure has enough support to pass.
