A senior official says Turkish authorities have searched a truck close to the border with Syria and seized 1,200 rocket heads.

Gov. Huseyin Avni Cos said Thursday the weapons were discovered in Adana, 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the Turkish-Syrian border, by officials who stopped and searched the truck as part of an anti-drug smuggling effort.

Cos said an investigation had been launched but said the weapons were believed to be "going to some organizations or states" outside of Turkey. He did not name them.

Turkey, which shares a 910-kilometer (566-mile) border with Syria, is a major hub for rebels fighting against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime. The U.N. says Syria's three-year civil war has killed at least 100,000 people and forced millions of Syrians from their homes.
