Turkey releases 5 suspects in vast corruption investigation that has shaken government

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey's state-run news agency says the five remaining suspects jailed in a vast corruption investigation that has shaken Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government have been released on parole pending trial.

The Anadolu Agency says those freed Friday include the sons of two former ministers and a businessman suspected of bribery and illicit money transfers to Iran. A dozen had been jailed in all.

The release comes just days after the government replaced prosecutors leading the investigation, sparking accusations of a cover-up.

Erdogan says the investigation is a conspiracy to discredit his government before local elections March 30.

Recordings of alleged wiretapped conversations have been posted on Twitter and YouTube recently, including one in which Erdogan orders his son to dispose of cash. Erdogan says the recordings are fabricated.
