Tunisian authorities say four police officers have been detained on suspicion they tortured a robbery suspect who later died.

Tunisia's Interior Ministry said Monday the officers are suspected of torturing Abderraouf Khamassi, 34, who was arrested Aug. 28.

The ministry says that during his questioning by police, Khamassi went into a "deep coma" and was taken to a hospital, where he died Saturday with a wound to his skull.

Two investigations, one administrative and the other judicial, have been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding Khamassi's death.

Police brutality was one reason Tunisians hit the streets in a popular uprising that ousted their longtime dictator last year.

The country now has a government led by a moderate Islamist party.
